NASS Complements MOD to achieve total Security.

The National Assembly is to support the Nigerian Armed forces with additional resources towards achieving success in the fight against insurgency and related crimes. Chairman House Committee on Defence Hon Olujimi Benson stated this during an oversight function in Ship House.

Hon Olujimi noted that Nigerians expect better outcomes from the Armed forces and the House saw the need to support the military through the Ministry of Defence. “Those who have chosen to protect our lives and property as well as the territorial integrity of Nigeria, deserve to be adequately motivated. A well-motivated Soldier is a function of adequate welfare among others.”

He stressed that the House Committee on Defence will ensure that soldiers welfare and entitlements are prioritised as a motivating factor. Hon Olujimi charged the Minister to develop a robust platform that would be sharing information with the Media so that the public will be better informed on the activities of the Ministry.

“The 9th House of Representatives has resolved to continue supporting the Armed forces of Nigeria in ensuring security, peace and prosperity.” he added. In his remarks, the Minister of Defence General Bashir Salihi Magashi expressed appreciation to the Parliaments in their patriot resolve to complement the efforts of the Defence Ministry as it is Strategizing to win the fight against insurgency.

The Minister pointed out that in addition to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and citizens, as well as values , resources and territorial integrity, military contributes to international peace and security. “In carrying out our mandate we as well grapple with some challenges in terms of coordination, logistics and pressure on resources.” He said.

Gen Magashi remarked that synergy with the National Assembly would spur actions on the efforts of the Ministry to achieve its statutory obligations. The meeting was attended by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defence Musa Istifanus and management Staff.
