Freedom of Information.

The Ministry of Defence is bound by the Freedom of Information Act, 2011. Citizens, journalists and organisations have the right to request any record held by the Ministry, subject only to the narrow statutory exemptions.

How it works.

    Submit Use the form (left) or send a letter to the FOI Desk Officer at Ship House, Area 10, Abuja.

    Acknowledgement We acknowledge in writing within 3 working days with a reference number.

    Response Records or a written reasoned reply within 7 working days of receipt.
  4. 4
    Appeal If you disagree with the response you may appeal to the Federal High Court under §20 of the FOI Act.
Exemptions. The Ministry can withhold a record only if its disclosure would damage national defence, foreign relations, an ongoing investigation, or fall within another narrow statutory exemption (FOI Act §11–17). Where exemptions apply we will tell you and cite the section.

Annual FOI report

Each year the Ministry publishes the number of FOI requests received, granted, partially granted and refused. The latest report is available on request from the FOI Desk Officer.
