Defence Minister Commissions Borehole and Pit Toilets
Persistent activities of Boko Haram Sect in Nigeria over the past years, coupled with incessant killings by Fulani Herdsmen, has resulted in creation of Camps in so many parts of the country to house the displaced persons.
The Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali made this remarks while commissioning a bore-hole and ventilated Pit Toilet for the internally displaced Persons Camp, at Karimajiji, Abuja.
Dan-Ali further said “The Health Services Department of the Ministry of Defence, in the discharge of their corporate social responsibilities, found out enormous health burden faced by the people in the IDP Camp at Karimajiji, ranging from communicable disease, diarrhea, skin rashes, which would be attributed to health environmental factors as a result of overcrowding, inadequate safe water supply and other health services.”
The interaction and discussions with the leadership of the camp revealed the need for supply of safe water, and ventilated improved pit toilet to the inhabitants. The commissioning of these facilities is the product of this discussion between the Ministry of Defence and the Leadership of the IDP Camp.
As part of the occasion of commissioning, The Health Service Department of MOD also conducted free medical consultation and treatment of some health diseases, in addition of other welfare services like provision of food items, toiletries, slippers, used clothing in good condition, cleaning materials, waste bins and of course refreshments.
The Hon Minister who was represented at the occasion by Rear Admiral Stanford Enoch said, the construction of a borehole, ventilated pit toilets and relief materials was to ensure that IDPs are not neglected, stressing that Federal Government through the Ministry of Defence will continue to assist the IDPs to reduce the burden of hardship, by ensuring the quick returns to their homes.
Earlier speaking, Dr. Oluwatoyin, the Director Medical Services, and the coordinator of the event tasked the IDPs to use the facilities judiciously, and sincerely appreciated the Leadership, support, and encouragement of the Hon, Minister of Defence, Mansur Mohammed Dan-Ali, the Permanent, MrsNuratuBatagarawa for making the event a successful and memorable one and reiterated the readiness of the Department to Extend this noble gesture to other IDP camps in the future.
